Dear Governor Riley:
Thank you for your letter of June 24, 1983 which provided us with your staff's detailed comments on the Comission's proposed rule,10 CFR Part 53.
Your continued interest and assistance in matters related to nuclear waste management, as reflected by your letter, are recognized and appreciated.
The comment period on the proposed rule recently closed (June 28,1983),and the staff is in the process of evaluating all coments that we have received as a basis for appropriate revision of the rule.
I assure you that your comments and concerns will receive careful consi,deration in the development of the final rule.
In August it is expected that, together with the staff analysis and resolution of the comments, the final rule will be presented to the Comission for consideration. When the final rule is published, the Supplementary Information accompanying the rule will specifically address all comments. A copy will be provided directly to your office.
Mr. L. C. Rouse of the NRC staff has contacted Dr. Stucker regarding your comments. Dr. Stucker was informed that the staff would contact him, as you i
requested, if any questions developed during the staff's evaluation of the l
comments. Mr. Rouse noted that 31 comment letters have been received and has sent copies to Df. Stucker for his information.
