O POWER COMPANY 231 W. MICHIGAN, P.O. BOX 2046, MILWAUKEE, WI 53201 I

June 28, 1983 Mr. J. G. Keppler, Regional Administrator 1

Office of Inspection and Enforcement,

~-

Region III U. S. NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION 799 Roosevelt Road Glen Ellyn, Illinois 60137

Dear Mr. Keppler:

DOCKETS 50-266 AND 50-301 AMENDED REPLY TO INSPECTION REPORT NOS. 50-266/82-17 AND 50-301/82-17 POINT BEACH NUCLEAR PLANT, UNITS'l AND 2 This is a report for your information on the status of the implementation of fire protection corrective actions which we committed to do in our January 21, 1983 reply to Inspection Report Nos. 50-266/82-17 and 50-301/82-17.

In that letter we responded to each violation, noncompliance, and unresolved item identified in i

the inspection reports.

Where applicable, we-committed to corrective

]

actions which would be implemented by various dates scheduled from the time of the letter through June 1984 to prevent recurrence of items identified in the inspection' reports.

We have received your May 9, 1983 letter regarding our January 21 response to the subject inspection reports.

It is our understanding that-you find our response acceptable in all areas except for the areas addressed.in items 1, 2, 4, and-5 of your May 9 letter.

To date, implementation of corrective actions outlined

~

in our response has been ahead of schedule on most items.

Implemen-tation of the transient combustibles control-procedure, however,Lis

'not expected to be complete'by the June 30, 1983 commitment date.

I Although a procedure has been developed,~ implementation is not I^'

practical until the plant can be brought into.conformance with all parts of the procedure such as identification offstorage areas and marking of all fire retardant lumber.

The'large work load imposed on the plant staff by-the Unit 2 refueling, steam generator repair, and TMI-backfit outage necessitates changing the implementation date for this item to September 30, 1983.

/g

?The current status of action on the items identified in 1

JL the inspection reports and responded to in our January 21 letter is e~

outlined below.
