Well, I did have a question and I

5 Can they handle a full 7 percent, or is it only a percent or i

7 WITNESS. JONES:

Well, the liquid-solid natural-a cir=ulation = ode is capable of removing the core energy 9 af ter reactor trip, and has been proven by various tests and 10 unplanned o:currences.

The boiler condenser mode is also 11 capable of doing the same scrt of thing.

It,vould choose 12 the system pressure where an adequate delta T would be 13 established between the primary system and the secondary 14 side liquid such that the heat could be transferred and that 15 pressure voud be dependent upon hov large a condensing 16 surf ace you had, and the type of energy you had to remove.

17 DR. JCEDAN:

I see.

And that is the reason you 18 vant 95 percent. full.

WITNESSJCNS:

The 95 percent full guarantees 19 20 th at you would have the capability for an exposed surface 21 area above the bottom of th e reactor coolant pumps such that 22 if you condensed steam in the primary tubes, the drop of 23 vater that vould then be added would push another drop of 24 vater back over the pump and cause the circulation to 25 continue, because of the loop seal arrangement that exists 8307080755 801130 PDR ADOCK 05000289 T

So you vould have the 15 capability f or a 5 ' foot. exposed surface area and then any 16 steam condensed in that region, provided that you maintained 17 th e reactor coolant system inventory sufficiently such that-

,18 th e loop real was full, any steam condensed in th e region 19vould fall'into that water which, by the hydrostatic head, 20 would push a little water over the pump and keep a
