Dear Mr. Gary:

Subject:

Comanche Peak - May House Eligibility for Inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places In accordance with its responsibility under 36 CFR 63, the Nuclear Regulatory Comission requested a deternination of the eligibility of the May House for inclusion in the llational Regis*.er of Historic Places.

On April 12, 1983, the Keeper of the flational Register notified the Nuclear Regulatory Comission that the Secretary of the Interior has determined that the May House is not eligible for inclusion in the National Register with the following coment:

Built in 1882 as a Southern stone "I" house with Italianate features, the Benjamin May House is not eligible for the National Register as a distinctive example of its style, period, and method of construction. Due to the extensive remodelling and enlargement of the house in 1937, it no longer possesses integrity of workman-ship, overall design, setting, feeling, and association. The building's architectural merit has seriously been compromised by the raising of the 2nd story, which entailed the addition of four windows, the noticeable reworking and elimination of original stonework, vertical extension of the front facade, and raising of the roofline. Furthermore, the encasenent of the historic stone house in the larger frame house and the addition of the front porch have obscured t* resource's identity as a significant 19th-century type, style, and method of construction in Texas.
