" Robert Shaw Thermostatic Flow Control Valves" Subj: Final 10CFR50.55(e) Report - Diesel Generator Thermostatic Valves

Dear Mr. Seidle:

This letter provides the final 10CFR50.55(c) report on the diesel generator thermostatic valves at the Wolf Creek Generating Station. This matter was initially reported by Mr. Otto Maynard of Kansas Gas and Electric Company (KGE) to Mr. Ray Hall of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Region IV, on June 22, 1982. Supplemental information was provided in References 1), 2) and 3). In audition, Colt Industries reported this matter to Region III of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission pursuant to 10CFR21. A description of the thermostatic valve deficiency and the safety implications were provided in Reference 1) and were also the subject of Reference 4).

The valves at the Wolf Creek Generating Station have been reworked and are now free of the reported potential defect. More specifically, the valves have been replaced with a unit containing an overrun assembly utilizing a cotter pin to positively lock the nut to the stem.

In addition, the "O" ring used to control bypass leakage within the valve has been removed as recommended in Reference 4).

If you have any questions concerning this subject, please contact me or Mr. Otto Maynard of my staff.

-)
