Dear Mr. Farrar:

Subject; Mechanical Equipment Environmental Qualification Program for Byron /Braidwood Stations By letter dated January 14, 1983, you described a program for the environnental qualification of safety-related mechanical equipment as required by GDC 4 and Sections III and XVII of Appendix B, 10 CFR 50. The program description is general and does not provide sufficient information to conduct a review. Although all of the information requested in SRP 3.11 need not be submitted to the staff, the regulations require that a review and evaluation be performed that includes the following:

1)

Identification of safety-related mechanical equipment located in harsh environment areas, including required operating times and plant location.

2)

Identification of non-metallic sukomponents of this equipment.

r 3)

Identification of the environmental conditions for which this enuipment must be qualified. The applicable environments are described in your June 17, 1982 electrical equipment quali-fication program.

4)

Identification of non-metallic material capabilities.

5) Evaluation of environmental effects.

Please submit the information required in Item 1) within 30 days of receipt of this letter. We will then select approximately three items and request that you provide the information discussed in Itens 2) through 5) for eilr review.
