Gentlemen:

.

Subject:

Inspection 50-286/82-09

_

This refers to your letter dated January 28, 1983, in response to our letter

dated November 4, 1982.

Thank you for the information provided in your letter.

Your evaluation of the installed radial type sprinkler nozzle, concludes that the

coverage provided by the installed nozzle is equal to or superior to a system

utilizing the horizontal side-wall type nozzle. We agree that the EA-1 radial

'

type sprinkler nozzle has adequate capacity, however, it is not apparent in your

safety evaluation that our concern regarding the effective coverage by the radial

type nozzle has been addressed.

The use of the horizontal side-wall nozzle was specified because of the narrow

horizontal spacing between trays (6 inches) and the need to direct the water spray

horizontally between the trays. The concern pertains to the structural interference

by the top and bottom tray which reduces the effective spray cone by obstructing the

top and bottom half of the spray cone thus reducing the amount of water available

for distribution along the horizontal length of the tray.

This concern was discussed with Mr. J. Schivera, IP-3, Licensing Coordinator, o.,

February 28, 1983. We were informed that a supplement to your memo of January 28,

1983 would be submitted clarifying the issue. We have not received this supplement

to-date.

We request that you submit the required information so that we may determine the

acceptability of the as-installed configuration.

Your cooperation with us is appreciated.

Sincerely,
