Dear Mr. Denton:
The NRC Staff Safety Evaluation' Report concerning the McGuire Unit I reactor trip breakers notes that Duke Power Company has committed to modify the automatic shunt trip design to conform to criteria and schedules being developed by the Salem Task Force.- The purpose of this letter is to clarify Duke Power Company's intentions regarding this commitment.
Duke Power Company will modify the design or the automatic shunt trip on McGuire Units 1 and 2 to install an independent fusing scheme for the breaker closing circuits and auxiliary relays. The need for any additional changes will be determined by a McGuire specific evaluation upon receipt of the results of_the Salem Task Force generic study.
Implementation schedules will be developed and provided to the NRC consistent with the schedule requirements specified by the task force.
