Dear.Mr. Querio:

The purpose of this letter is to document our understanding of the NRC requalification examination arocess to be administered at the Braidwood Nuclear Power Station during the wee (s of April 2 and 9, 1990.

The format to be employed at the Braidwood Station for operating examinations will differ from the previous NRC administered examinations in the following cpecific features:

Alternative A Alternative B (LastExam)

(Forthcoming Exam)

- 1 HRC examiner per each

- 1 NRC examiner per 2

operator, operators.

- Perform 10 JPMs and answer

- Perform 5 JPMs and answer the associated questions the associated questions for each operator, of 5 other JPMs for each Success requires at least operator. Success requires 80% SAT and at least 70%

at least 80% of JPMs and questions SAT. At least 70% of questions SAT. At 2 questions per task.

least 2 questions per task.

The Alternative B approach to operating exams applies to dynamic simulator and JPM evaluations. We understand that groups of three or four operators are routinely evaluated on the simulator.

The Alternative B evaluation by the NRC should not alter normal facility _

evaluation practices. You may utilize the Alternative B approach or your current method of assigning one evaluator to one operator.

questions. The operators are not responsible for tasks performed or questions answered by the other party nor should they be asked to evaluate the same.

An operator must observe the application portion of a JPM prior to answering any associated questions.

It is also our understanding that you normally conduct simulator training and evaluation with groups of three and four operators and have scheduled such groups for the NRC examination. Our experience at other plants has indicated that in a group of three operators the single SRO may become overwhelmed by the concurrent demands / distractions he will be confronted with.

This notwithstanding, we will honor your preference in the matter.

Any questions regarding this understanding should be directed to the Chief Examiner, Tim Reidinger at (708) 790-5551 orTomBurdickat(708)790-5566.
