REQUEST FOR PROPOSED ALTERi%TIVE TO REQUIREMENTS OF ASME SECTION III FOR THE V. C. SUlHER NUCLEAR STATION, LINIT NO.1 (TAC 75953)

By letter of February 1,1990, you requested approval for the use of Babcock & Wilcox steam generator plugs nanufactured with an alternative material at the V. C. Sunner Nuclear Station, Unit No.1, (Summer Station).

The alternative material is a nickel base alloy, ASME designation SB-166, UNS N06690 ( Alloy 690).

The staff has reviewed your request and supportirg information and concludes that the use of Alloy 690 as a proposed alternative to the use of Alloy 660, in accordance with the requirenants of the hSME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, will provide an acceptable level of quality and safety because it has superior corrosion resistant properties.

Jse of Alloy 690 in this application is hereby authorized under the provisions of 10 CFR 50.55a(a)(3) at the Sunener Station.
