Dear l'r. Hairston:

SUBJECT:

NRC GENERIC LETTER 89-13, " SERVICE WATER SYSTEM PROBLEMS-AFFECTING SAFETY-RELATED EQUIPMENT," DATED JULY 18, 1989 (TACs 74012 & 74013)

By letter dated January 23, 1990, Georgia Power Company submitted the first of two required responses to Generic Letter (GL) 89-13 for the E&in I. Hatch Nuclear Plant, Units 1 and 2.

In your letter you coninitted to each of the five recommended actions of GL 89-13, or-to an equally effective alternate course of action. We-accept your response as fulfilling this requirement of the generic letter.

You are reminded that if you choose, or later change to, a course of action different from the recomnended actions of the generic letter, you should document and retain _in ap)ropriate plant records a justification that the heat -

removal requirenents of-the service water system are satisfied by use of the alternative program.

We look forward to receiving the second of the two required responses to GL 89-13, which we understand will be submitted within 30 days following completion of the Unit 1 Fall 1991 refueling outage.

Please call me if there are any questions.

Since rely,
