Docket No. '50 482 Bart D. Withers President and Chief Executive Officer Wolf Creek Nuclear Operating Corporation Post Office Box-411 Burlington, Kansas 66839

Dear Mr. Withers:

SUBJECTi REQUEST FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION REGARDING SIMULATOR CERTIFICATION FOR WOLF CREEK GENERATING STATION The staff has _ completed its review of your initial Simulator Certification submittal dated January 10,1989(WM89-0010) for the Wolf Creek Generating Station simulator.

This review has identified a significant area in which there is, as yet, inadequate information to ensure complete documentation of your certification. The area of concern is your exception to all references to-

"real time" in the ANSI /ANS-3.5-1985 standard. Additional justification for this exception is required because the incorporation, over time, of simulator

-modifications in accordance with the ANSI /ANS.3.5 1985 standard is likely to degrade your simulator's performan_ce with respect to "real time". Your submittal

. indicates that " Improvements / upgrades to the simulator computer system are being evaluated," but it does not provide the details of this evaluation process.

Please provide a discussion of this evaluation and include your:

criteria for determining when simulator computer improvements / upgrades are required. You are requested to provide this information within 60 days following receipt of this letter so that this information may be promptly l

incorporated in the staff's records, p

l

- As indicated above, our. review is only to ensure completeness of documentation.

The review does not extend to verification of-the accuracy of the data or statements made in the certification, nor does it provide NRC approval of.your 6

simulator for use in administering operating tests.
