MECHANICAL PLUGS (TAC h05. 73190 AND 73191)
Wisconsin Electric Power Company (WEPCO) responded to NRC Bulletin 89-01 by letter dated June 16, 1989.
Based on our review of your response, we conclude that the actions taken by WEPCO fully respond to the issues identified in the bulletin and are acceptable.
In your response, you addressed each of the action items specified in Bulletin i
I 89-01. Pursuant to Item 1, you provided corrected information concerning the installation of susceptible riechanical plugs at the Point Beach Nuclear Plant.
l In your response to Itera 2, we observe that: plug lifetimes have been i
estimated in an appropriate manner; a remedial action plan has been im-plemented; ALARA considerations have been appropriately addressed; you comiitted not to use mechanical plugs from heat numbers NX-3279, NX-3513, HX-3962, or NX-4523; and you coniitted to maintain records, make appropriate L
i examinations, and provide the results to Westinghouse.
Based on your response, the Point Beach Nuclear Plant does not require either of the deferrals permittte by Items 3 or 4.
WEPC0 has taken actions consistent with the provisions of HRC Bulletin 89-01 in each of the areas requested. B: sed on our review of your response, we conclude that there is an adequate basis to closeout this issue for the Point Beach Nuclear Plant, Unit Nos.1 and 2.
Therefore, we consider actions related to NRC Bulletin 89-01 and TAC Nos. 73190 and 73191 to be complete.
Sincerely,
/s/
