Subject:
LaSalle County Station Units 1 and 2 Request for Exemption from 10 CFR 70.24 NRC Docket Nos. 50-373/374 Reference (a):
L. O. DelGeorge letter to R. C.
Page datec October 5, 1981.
Dear Mr. Schwencer:
The purpose of this letter is to withdraw our request for exemption from the requirements of 10 CFR 70.24 as stated in Reference (a) and to resubmit a modified request as the result of discussions with Mr. A. Bournia on October 26, 1981.
Commonwealth Edison Company hereby requests an exemption from the requirements of 10 CFR 70.24 for criticality monitors during the operation of LaSalle County Station Units 1 and 2 until the completion of the first refueling outage.
Commonwealth Edison Company currently holds NRC Materials Licenses Nos. SNM-1802 and SNM-1833.
In the letter dated September 25, 1978, from L.
C. Rouse to M.
S. Turbak, an exemption from the provisions of 10 CFR 70.24 was granted for SNM-1802 and SNM-1833 because ".... The NRC Staff has determined that you have shown good cause for granting the exemption and that granting such an exemption will not endanger public life or property or the common defense and security and is otherwise in the public interest."
The exemption to 10 CFR 70.24 requirements was granted for SNM-1802 and SNM-1833 based on informttion provided in:
Application for Special Nuclear Material License for LaSalle County Station, dated May 17, 1977.
LaSalle County Station Units 1 and 2 Supplemental Information Concerning Application for Special Nuclear Material License, dated April 27, 1978, LaSalle County Station Units 1 and 2 Supplemental Information Concerning Application for Special Nuclear

Upon the conversion of Construction Permits No. CPPR-99 and CPPR-100 to Operating Licenses, SNM-1802 and SNM-1833 expire.,
Commonwealth Edison Company requests that the exemption to the. requirements of 10 CFR 70.24 which has already been granted ~for
' SNM-1802 and SNM-1833 be extended to apply-to the Operating Licenses for'LaSalle County Station Units 1 and 2.
This exemption would be in effect until the completion of the first refueling outage on Unit 1; at which time the required monitors.will be installed.
The exemp-tion will allow installation of the monitors without unnecessary fuel moves and without exposing the fuel currently stored in the fuel vault to potential damage.
.If there are any questions on this matter,-please direct them to this office.
Very truly yours, a
L. 0.'De1 George Director of Nuclear Licensing
