Dear Mr. Engelken:

Subj ect:

Docket No. 50-361 San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station, Unit 2 This letter confirms verbal notification on Sep-tember 15, 1981, of a condition discovered in construction which is considered potentially reportable in accordance with 10CFR50.55(e).

During startup testing, a test was conducted to demonstrate that once ESF actuation of equipment is initiated, the safety related equipment will remain in the emergency mode even when the ESFAS signal is reset.

The test results indi-cated that certain safety related equipment failed to remain in the emergency mode as required.

We are performing an evaluation of this condition and will submit an appropriate report in accordance with 10 CFR50. 55 (e) (3).

If you have any questions or require addi-tional information, please let me know.

l Very truly yours, g k-cc:
