Docket Nos. 50-361 and 50-362, San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station, Units 2 & 3

Dear Mr. Seyfrit:

On July 21, 1981, Southern California Edison, San Onofre Units 2 and 3, informed Mr. Engelken, U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Region V of the subject deficiency.

I Subsequent evaluation by the Bechtel Review Committee concludes that the condition is also' reportable under 10 CFR Part 21. The Southern California Edison report contains all the information required by Part 21 with the exception of the information required by 21.21(b)(3) VI ts it is unknown to Bechtel.

Westinghouse Electric Corporation was notified of the condition on June 30, 1981.

l Westinghouse Electric Corporation will be advised by letter that the component as applied by Bechtel contains a substantial safety hazard defect and will be requested to review the information supplied by Bechtel and determine its responsibility for compliance to Part 21, Section 21.21(b)(3)VI.

Other Bechtel Divisions wece advised of the defect by copies of appropriate reports and correspondence. Should it be determined that basic components

with thic, defect are in use, have been supplied to or are being supplied l for one or more other Bachtel projects, the affected Division will report I the condition according to the Regulation.
