Dearfir. Hicklin:

SUBJECT:

CATAWBA NUCLEAR STATION, UNITS 1 AND 2 - ENVIR0tlHEHTAL Il1 PACT STATEttENT As part of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Comission's (USHRC) preparation of the Environmental Impact Statement for the Catawba Nuclear Station operating licenses, l

we are required to consult with your office to determine if the operation of the i

station may affect any plants or animals, present in the vicinity of the site, listed or proposed to be listed as endangered or threatened species. This is in corpliance with the Endangered Species Act of 1973, as amended,16 U.S.C.S.-1531 et seq. The Catawba site is located in the North Central portion of South Carolina j

approximately 9.6 km north of Rock Hill, S.C., and adjacent to Lake Wylie. The location of the site is shown on the enclosed map.

The possible impact of Catawba on endangered or threatened species was previously examined prior to the issuance of the construction permits for Catawba in August 1975. We are now in the process of reviewing prior findings relative to environ-i nental impacts from plant operation.

In addition, as part of the U. S. NRC environ-mental review, we plan to visit the site on September 22, 1981, and would like to invite you and your staff to attend.

We are, therefore, interested in learning fron you if the Catawba site may have any operating impacts on endangered or threatened species present in the vicinity of i

the site. Should you require any clarifications, please contact Hichael Hasnik, the Environnental Review Coordinator, at (301) 492-4892.

We thank you for your assistance and shall send you a copy of the Draf t Environ-nental Irpact Statement for your coment when it is issued.

l Sincerely,

'linor G. Adensam, Acting Chief 8109080444 810901 Licensing Branch No. 4 DR ADOCK 050O Division of Licensing
