REQUEST FOR MEETING TO DISCUSS REACTOR COOLANT PUMP (RCP)

FAILURE AT PRAIRIE ISLAND UNIT NO. 2 AND PROPOSED AGENDA In regard to your LicensecEvent Report submitted by letter dated July 17, 1981 regarding the Prairie Island Nuclear Generating Plant Unit 2 RCP failure, we request that you and the representatives of your con-tractor performing the metallurigical examination meet with us to discus!, the details of the June 11, 1981 failure of RCP No. 21.

In order for the meeting to be as informative and productive as pos-sible, we suggest that it be scheduled after we have reviewed your follow up report and after Westinghouse has completed their examination of the shift failure. While a specific date for the meeting cannot be set at this time, we suggest that mid-September 1981 be considered as a reasonable target date. A proposed agenda for the meeting is enclosed.

Agenda topics are based on the information currently available to us.

Please contact D. Dilanni, Prairie Island Project Manager, to establish a firm date for the meeting and for any additional information you may require.

Proposed Agenda RCP No. 21 Failure of the Pump Shaft Prairie Island Nuclear Generating Plant, Unit No. 2 Docket No. 50-306 1.

Operating experience leading to the discovery of the pump failure at P. I. Unit No. 2.

2.

Operating experience of other pumps of similar design including operating history as of September 1,1981.

3.

Details of the failure mode of the P. I. Unit No. 2 pump including a detailed design description of the pump shaft.

4.

Overview of the safety significance of the pump shaft failure at P. I.

5.

Discussion of the pump failure at P. I. as compared to other past pump failures (i.e. such as Surry).

6.

Monitoring methods and criteria for measuring pumps vibrations including the bases for unacceptable levels of vibration.

The presentation should also include monitoring methods such as axial and radial measurements, local vs. control room readouts, etc. Also, give a description of. the presently in' talled field measuring devices.

7.

Pump shaft material selection, manufacturing history and mechanical loading.
