proposes to delay removal and solidification of low byel radioactive waste ip. M.

from storage lagoons at its Wood River Junction, Rhode Island facility on

the basis that solidification might not be an acceptable disposal method to the Department of Energy if and when that agency agrees to assume re-

sponsibility for disposal of UNC's waste as requested by the company under m

provisions of P.L.96-573.

pi We can find no merit to the company's reasoning and arguments in this matter and believe any further delays in the removal of waste material

from the lagoons for proper packaging and disposal to be both unwarranted and unconscionable. As you are doubtlessly aware, waste storage lagoons at the Wood River Junction site have leaked in the past and are the source of persistent groundwater contamination. The State of Rhode Island cannot, Fi therefore, accept as reasonable or justified any action or inaction by hb+;:
