Dear Governor Garrahy:
S I am pleased to respond to your letter of July 17, 1981 regarding the removal of the low-level waste sludge from the storage lagoons at United Nuclear Corporation's (UNC) facility in Wood River Junction, Rhode Island.
At the urging of the NRC staff, UNC agreed not to delay the removal and processing of this material.
A contractor started the processing of low-level waste from the storage lagoons on August 3, 1981.
UNC estimates that processing could be completed as early as November of this year but no later than January 1,1982. NRC staff will visit the facility, along with representatives of the State, to check progress from time to time.
