Dear Mr. Petrick:

IG

Subject:

Use of ASME Code Case N-275 for SNUPPS Projects, Docket Nos. STN 50-482 (Wolf Creek. Unit 1). STN 50-483 and STN 50-486 (Callaway Units 1 and 2)

We have completed our review of the SNUPPS request for authorization to use ASME Code Case N-275 for application in the_ repair of welds for SNUPPS Projects STN 50-482 (Wolf Creek Uriit 1), STN 50-483 and STN 50-486 (Callaway Units 1 and 2), as identified in your letter SLNRC 81-29, dated May 11, 1981.

Code Case N-275, dated May 15,1980, " Repair of Welds,Section III, Division 1,"

ir acceptable subject to the following conditions in addition to those specified in the code case:

If an indication is. removed and weld metal layers remain, the case cannot be used by gouging through the wall.

Instead, in such a situation, examination of the cavity is required when the indication has been removed.

Therefore, Code Case N-275 may be used for application on SNUPPS Projects STN 50-482, STN 50-483, and STN 50-486, subject to the conditions indicated above. Use of the Code Case should be documented in the FSAR.

The SNUPPS request for authorization to use Code Case N-275 also enclosed a letter from Daniel Construction Comoany, DLUC-6207, dated March 9,1981.

It is our opinion that item 3 on page 2 of the. Daniel letter is an incorrect interpretation of Paragraphs NB/NC/ND/NE/NF/NG-4453.1 of the code. Based on the limited information in the Daniel. letter, there may be instances where the repair of weld joint assemblies for the SNUPPS Projects are not.in con-formance with Section III of the code.

Questions may be addressed to the licensing project. manager for the SNUPPS designs, Dr. G. E. Edison.

Sincerely, 8108210172 810730 PDR ADOCK 05000482
