SUBJECT:

Renewal of License SNM-171, Docket 70-194 ecp Gentlemen:

Massachusetts Institute of Technology submits herewith in sextuplicate information concer/ ting the renewal of Special Nuclear Material License No. SNM-171, which expired on September 30, 1980. Through oversight an application for renewal has not previously been submitted.

The license authorized posression of a maximum of 33 grams U-235 as fission foils, clad rods and plates, 19 grams Pu-239 as clad fission foils, and 4.4 milligrams Pu-242 as fission foils.

(Please note that the 19 grams Pu-239 should read "as neutron fi.ters" (not foils); see copy of license expiring February 28, 1970 and MIT amendment request dated August 9, 1968.)

Although none of the material is currently in use, MIT wishes to request renewal of the licence in some form in order to permit future It is our understanding that the Nuclear Regulatory Commission would use.

like to combine two or mc,re of the SNM licenses previously issued to MIT for this and other SNM.

Currently pending is the renewal of License No. SNM-986, Docket 70-93,8, which authorizes possession of much larger quantities of both U-235 and Pu than was previously allowed under License SNM-171 and which authorizes places of use that encompass areas permitted under License SNM-171.

It is therefore requested that the authorizations previously included in License No. SNM-171 be added to License No. SNM-986 at the time when it is extended.
