Oyster Creek Nuclear Generating Station Docket No. 50-219 Early Warning Prcnpt Notification System In response to your letter dated July 1, 1981, Oyster Creek Nuclear Generating Station has purchased and is proceeding with the installation of approximately fifty-three sirens to meet the requirement for a Prmpt Notification System. The sirens and location are describx1 in the attached Systm Description.
l The coordination, evaluation, ard selection of a cmprehensive early warning systan for the Oyster Creek Nuclear Generating Station has taken longer than anticipated and has resulted in the fact that the early warning system is not yet installed and operational. The manufacturer has ccmnitted to delivering the first ten sirens by September 1,1981, with a delivery schedule of ten per week until conplete. Installation of sirens, which is ccmtingent on obtaining rights of way, will begin with their arrival, with those in the 5 mile EPZ receiving priority. Targeted date for cmplete installation is October 15, 1981.
Pending installation and testing of the systs, alerting of the public will be accomplished through the Ocean County Civil Defense network using the existing alerting system; a ccurbination of sirens, sound trucks and broadcast nulia.

. TheLPrompt-Notification System will consist of.
approximately;53 sirens-located within the 10~ mile EPZ.
. Omnidirectional sirens were selected to provide; constant loudness and to take advantage or' the longer receptor area and.the additive effect.in areas between sirens wherever pre.cticable.
'The siren system will be activated by radio using

a digital control signal specifically designed to reduce the possibility of spurious activation.

controlled and activated'f.om'the Ocean County Sheriff's-I Communication Center upon recommendation from the State of.
- New Jersey Emergency Management' Center, or upon recommendation l
- of the Ocean County Emergency Management coordinator if urgently required.
I The system will provide coverage throughout the 10 mile EPZ except ha those arcas designated to. be preserved in an absolute natural state, and where electricity is therefore uncvailable.
The system provides additional coverage outside the 10 mile EPZ where unique geographical or political boundaries do not provide a natural dividing line.
The-system may be activated individually or in groups.
While it is presumed the entire system w.ill be

activated on initial notification, the capability is provided-to make the system.more flexible.and more useful to the county for purposes other than Tlert for Radiological Emergency.
