Westinghouse EMD Gate Valves On July 2, 1981, pursuant to 10CFR50.SS(e), Houston Lighing & Power Company, notified your office of an item concerning closure problems with Westinghouse (W) Electro-Mechanical Division (EMD) manufactured gate valves.

Westinghouse is currently performing an evaluation program which includes analyses and flow tests perforued in a hydraulic test laboratory. The subject valves will be modified based on the results of the evaluation to assure that the funcutonal requirements for the subject valves are met. The W schedule for this evaluation identifies that operating plants will be evalaated on a priority basis and all other plants (i.e. those under construction) will be evaluated once the evaluation for operating plants is complete. The current schedule identifies that the valve models utilized on the South Texas Project (STP) will be evaluated during the final quarter, 1981. A status report concerning this iten will be submitted to your office by December 18, 1981.
