N This is in response to your letter, dated June 3,1981, concerning r ef g r' o
an NRC contract with the New York State Geological Survey for the West Valley site.
I am enclosing a copy of the contract you requested.
The contract work is being performed under the auspices of the NRC Office of Regulatory Research. The Project Officer for the contract is a competent hydrogeologist.
In addition, this type of research is nomally revinwed by an NRC research review group, established expressly for each project. The Office of Regulatory Research will consider your coments, and others, in context with the contract work.
This would include a consideration of technical content from any interested parties by the research review group.
For this reason, we believe it is unnecessary to fom an additional independent review board, such as you suggest.
Please note that I am recponding to your letter as the Project Manager for the West Valley docket, tir. Haughney has been reassigned within the NRC.
