Docket Nos. 50-338 OL and 50-339 OL Turb'ine Missiles

Dear Judges:

In my letter,.to you of June 19, I mentioned that West-inghouse would be able to recalculate the recommended inspec-tion intervals for the-North Anna turbines;by the end of July.

Westinghouse has now provided those calculations for North Anna 1:

Dr. John H. Buck Dr. Lawrence R. Quarles July 31, 1981 Page Three As for Unit 2, Vepco has not yet received all of the re-commended inspection intervals, but Westinghouse has advised by phone that the critical disk for Unit 2 has a recommended interval of 32.7 months.

North Anna 2 is not operating at present, but assuming it starts back up on August 6 and op-erates continuously thereafter, 32.7 months of operation from its original start-up will be achieved about-August 1953.

The Unit 2 operating license requires a turbine inspection at

(

the second refueling, which is currently s'heduled for May c

1983.

In my June 19 letter I promised to provide you the com-puter p'rint-outs with the material pr.operties, bore stresses,

and operating temperatures for the Unit 2 turbines, (I al-ready sent you the corresponding Unit 1 data by letter of February 12, 1981,)

I find, however, that some of the data that appear on the Unit 2 print-outs may be out-of-date, and so I think it will be better if 1 provide you wit h the neces-sary Unit 2 data as part of my final information package.

(The Unit 1 print-outs that I provided February 12 were up-dated ones, and th,ey are ls till correct. )

Over the next few weeks I will try to conpile all the i

documents that compose Vepco's eviden~ce on turbine missiles,

tie them together with some sort of summary explanation, and tie up some locne ends in the case that I believe are still lying about.

I hope to have all this completed and ready to

If-it looks as though there will be any delay beyond Septem-ber 30 I will let you know as soon as I can foresee it.

If any of this is unacceptable, please let me know.
