ANNUAL OPERATING REPORT Idaho State University AGN-201 Nuclear Reactor Pocatello, Idaho 83209 July 29,1981

1) Brief Narrative Summary of Changes During this reporting period, calendar year 1980, there have been no changes in facility design, performance characteristics, or operating procedure relating to reactor safety.

Major surveillance was performed during the period in accordance with the Technical Specifications; the following is a summary of the resul ts:

a. Visual inspection of the control rod drive mechanisms satisfactory.
b. Scram drop times of all control rods less than 90 milliseconds.
c. Rod run up times were measured and average reactivity insertion rates calculated and were less than .030% AK/K per second.
d. Channel tests of all safety channels and interlocks have been satisfactory.
e. Power and period calibrations were per. formed on the instruments and no significant change from the previous calibration was found.

i

f. The shield tank was visually inspected and no excessive corrosion or water leakage was apparent.

4. ' Discussion of Major Safety Related Corrective Maintenance The only safety related corrective maintenance for calendar year 1980 was discussed in the last operating report dated May 15, 1980.
5) Changes to the Facility a) There have been no changes to the facility as described in the application for license.

b) There have been no changes to the procedures as described in Facility Technical Specifications.

c) There were no new or untried experiments or tests performed during the reporting period other than the approach to and operation at 5 watts discussed in the last operating report.

6) Safety Evaluations No changes, tests, or experiments were performed which were not submitted to the NRC for approval. Subsequently, no safety evaluations were made for the reporting period.

8) Summary of Radiological Surveys Outside the Facility The radiological survey performed during this reporting period was discussed in the last annual operating report. A beta-gamma survey conducted at the wall closest to the reactor with reactor power at 5 watts indicated 1.8 millirem / hour in an area about one foot above ground and at the closest point to the reactor. The aniversity does not operate the reactor for periods exceeding approximately three hours at a time.
9) Radiation Exposure No person received greater than 100 millirem. No visitor received greater than 50 millirem.
