Subject:

Reportable 10 CFR 50.55 (e) Item 4" through 18" Motor Operated Gate Valves Interim Report

Dear Sir:

On June 17, 1981 we reported that Wes tinghouse 6" through 18" motor operated gate valves were considered a reportable item under 10 CFR 50.55 (e).

This interim report is being filed in accordance with the thirty-day reporting requirements.

Westinghouse has been conducting tests to determine the cause of the failure of the 3" and 4" motor operated valves to tightly seal at test P.

Reference (3) is the final report on the test results and corrective action for the 3" valves.

Reference (4) is the interim report which identified the problem with the 4" valves. Westinghouse has now expanded the test program 'o include the remaining Westinghouse EMD valve sizes (6" through 18").

Tests for valve sizes 4" through 18" are expected to be completed early in 1982.

Upon review of the test results, a corrective action will be generated. We will update this interim report upon definition of the proposed corrective action and provide a final report on 4" through 18" motor operated gate valves by June, 1982.

Very truly yours,

& 1)
