Dear Mr. Denton:
Mr. Robert L. Tedesco's letter of May 19, 1981 outlined the NRC Staff position on natural circulation training for licensed operators on the second unit of a two unit station and further requested that Duke Power Company provide a re-sponse to this position. The purpose of this letter is to provide that re-sponse.
The McGuire simulator will be programmed to permit operation under natural cir-culation conditions.
The results of the McGuire Unit I natural circulation testing will then be used as a benchmark to determine the adequacy of the McGuire simulator to simulate natural conditions. If. acceptable, the simulator will then be used to train Unit 2 operators.
If it is determined that the simulator can-not be adequately programmed for natural circulation conditions, then the Unit 2 operator training requirements would 1e satisfied by in-plant training.
If there are further questions regarding this matter, please advise.
Ve y truly yours,
{-
