IE Bulletin 81-02

,c' Docket Nos. 50-361 and 50-362 San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station Units 2&3

References:

A. Lutter, SCE to NRC dated November 25, 1980; subject,Dacket Nos. 50-361 and 50-362, SONGS 2&3 B. Letter, SCE to NRC dated December 23, 1980; subject, Docket Nos. 50-361 and 50-362, SONGS 2&3 C. Letter, SCE to NRC dated January 28, 1981; subject, Docket Nos. 50-361 and 50-362, SONGS 283 The subject document, forwarded by NRC letter dated April 9,1981, describes testing which indicates that a number of gate type motor-operated valves (as identified in the bulletin) failed to fully close under conditions that approximated those of the valves'intcoded service. Construction permit holders were requested to ascertain whether any of the subject valves are or were to be installed in safety-related systems or as PORV block valves and if so, complete the recommended corrective action.

SCE has determined, through information provicbd by both the S023 A/E and NSSS vendor, that only two (2) of the subject valves (ene per unit-tag numbers 2&3 TV-9267 supplied by Westinghouse) have been utilized at S023.

Reports submitted to the NRC in accordance with 10 CFR 50.bb(e) (References A, B, and C) provided notification of the use of thsG valves, the information subsequently requested by Bulletin Item 4 for Construction Permit hciders, and gg a propred corrective action (replacement of the motor actuator and yoke with an assembly capable of meeting S023 requirements). SCE has been notified by 3 the S023 A/E that the corrective action proposed in Reference C has been completed.
