20555 License No. DPR-35 Docket No. 50-293 Request For a Meeting

Dear Sir:

Since Boston Edison Company first reported linear indications in the core spray sparger at Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station, we have been actively involved with General Electric Company in the planning, design work, tooling development and manufacturing efforts necessary to replace the core epray for power operation during Cycle 6.

However, as a parallel effort, Teledyne Engineering Services was contracted to perform independent stress analyses of the sparger indications, and Aptech Engineering Services, Inc. to perform fracture mechanics studies. As a result l

of these studies and analyses and with the aid of an improved image enhanced video tape cf our 1980 refueling outage inspections, subsequently reviewed by r

BECo., G.E., Teledyne and Aptech personnel, we have determined that there is no need to replace the core spray sparger a' this time as adequate assurance can be provided for its operability through Cycie 6.

We would appreciate the opportunity to present in a meeting with your staff, our findings as concluded above, and outline our planned acceptance criteria for additiona' iispection and testing to be performed during our upcoming refueling outage.

To acconmodate the appropriate contractor personnel involved in the different facets of our presentation, we request a meeting date on eithe.r July 30 or 31, 1981. Should one of these dates be acceptable to you and your staff, we would appreciate confirmation at your earliest convenience.

001 Very truly yours,
