AGREEMENT STATE: Maryland FACILTIY: Neutron Products, I'nc.
SUBJECT:
State Ordar and Request for NRC Assistance On July 2, a.m., SP staff was informed by the State of Maryland that the Department of Health was* issuing an Order to heutron Products, Inc.
(NPI),Dickerson, Maryland. The Order will suspend operations involving the melting of Cobalt 60 metal as part of the fabrication process for sealed sources. This action was reportably taken because of the potential of this activity in producing impacts on the environment. Surveys by the State thus far, however, have not revealed any radioactivity levels off-site of significance except for a discrete particle of Cobalt 60 discovered in November,1980 on a railroad right-of-way adjacent to the plant. The State plans to hold.a press conference at 12 noon, July 2, 1981, in connection with the issuance of this Order.
The State is requesting technical assistance from the NRC in the areas of environmental surveillan:e, security of the plant, hot cell operations, engineering design of the hot cell's exhaust system and environmental pathways of Cobalt 60. SP staff has been aware of the State's plans to request assistance in this matter and has already made arrangments with NMSS for assistance in environmental monitoring.
NPI manfactures sealed Cobalt 60 sowces for use in medical teletherapy and comercial radiation facilities. The State has indicated that there will not be an imediate Spact on the teletherapy source supply as a result of the order since NPI has a sizeable inventory of Cobalt 60 sources.
