FAILURE OF B PHASE MAIN TRANSFORMER

A failure of the B phase main transformer at. 7:23 a.m. 4 1

ed in a generator and reactor trip from 17% power.

The failure os "a br former caused an oil originated fire in the transformer trea on the northwest exterior corner wall of the turbine building.

Unit 1 and 2 containment buildings are located on the opposite side of the turbine building. The plant and three local volunteer fire departments responded. All fires were out by 8:45 a.m.

The fire shorted the overhead output lines of C Reserve Station fransformer and resulted in the transformer tripoing at 7:45 a.m.

One diesel generator automatically started and supplied power to the associated emergency bus.

A safety injection from the existing Low Low Tave coincident with a spurious High Steam Flew was received and manually reset after two minutes.

The reactor safety systems functioned as designed.

A fault in the transformer output bushing is suspected as the cause of the failure.

No personnel injuries or radioactivity releases occurred.

A two week outage to replace the transformer is anticipated.

Unit 1 continued to operate and was not affected.

Power was reduced to 30% as a precautionary measure.

Media interest occurred.

The licensee issued a press release.

No press release was l

issued by the NRC. The, Commonwealth of Virginia was informed.

The NRC Emergency Response Center received notification of this occurrence by teichene from the. licensee at 7:29 a.m. cn July 3.

Region II dispatched, on July 3, three inspectors and a supervisor to review the event.
