Re: Hine Mile Point Unit 1 g,

Docket No. 50-220 DPR-63

Dear Mr. Grier:

Your Inspection and Enforcement Bulletin 81-01 required a visual examination and manual test of mechanical snuhbers installed on safety related systems.

Our letter of March 24, 1981 provided our program for complying with the requirements of the Bulletin. The information below provides the results of our testing and examinations of mechanical snubbers at Nine Mile Point Unit 1.

During the spring 1981 refueling and maintenance outage, the one mechanical snubber previously installed on a safety related system (Pacific Scientific Company snubber Model PSA-10) was visually examined and manually tested. The results of our examination and testing verified that the snubber had freedom of movement over the range of stroke in both compression and tension. Based on these results, no corrective actions or evaluations as described in your Bulletin are required.

As outlined to you in our letter of March 24, 1981, additional mechanical snubbers were installed on safety related systems during the spring 1981 refueling and maintenance outage. Specifically, 35 mechanical snubbers manufactured by Pacific Scientific Company (Model PSA-35) were installed on the reactor recirculation system. These mechanical snubbers were tested by the manufacturer in accordance with your Bulletin.

Visual examinations were performed prior to installation. Based on the results of the examinations and testing, no corrective actions or evaluation as described in your Bulletin are required.
