Re: Docket No. STN 50-482 Cri gD#

Ref: Letter of 11/12/80 from GLKoester, KG&E, to W.C. Seidle, NRC Subj: Interim 10CFR 50.55(e) Report - Nonconforming Welds in Main Control Panels

Dear Mr. Seidle:

The purpose of this letter is to update the Referenced Report concerning weld discrepancies in the Main Control Panels and Auxiliary Relay Racks furnished to Wolf Creek site by Comsip Customline Corporation. It is our understanding that the NRC, Region III was advised by Union Electric of similar weld dis-crepancies in the Control Panels and relay racks also furnished by Comsip to Callaway Site.

Since the weld difficulties were first identified last summer, a generic program has been developed on behalf of both Wolf Creek and Callaway Sites to assess the impact of the weld discrepancies upon the structural integrity of the Comsip furnished panels and racks.

This program consists of seismic testing of a specially constructed prototype panel for purposes of determining the atress capabilities and limits of welds similar to those in the Wolf Creek and Callaway panels, this testing effort has been recently completed anG. the results are being utilized to develop criteria against which the as-welded panels can be measured and evaluated. A series of planned inspections and measurements are presently being initiated at both jobsites and will be used to assess the impact of reported weld discrepancies and further to provide a basis for disposition 810 4 210,2M 3
