Dear Mr. McGaughy:
SUBJECT:
GRAND GULF NUCLEAR STATION UNITS 1 AND 2-RESOLUTION OF OPEN ITEMS IN CORE PERFORMANCE BRANCH ORAFT SAFETY EVALUATIONS Our review of your application for the Grand Gulf Nuclear Station has progressed to the point that we now have a draft Safety Evaluation Report (SER) in the reactor fuels and reactor physics areas of the Core Perfonnance Branch Review.
We procose to comolete the review in these areas using the draft SER procedure, similar to that used in the mechanical engineering review. provides our reactor fuels draft SER to FSAR Section 4.2.
The draft SER identifies four open items which must be resolved before our review can be completed: (1) supplemental ECCS calculations with NUREG-0630 models, (2) periodic channel box deflection te::ts (3) combined seismic and LOCA loads analysis, and (4) fission gas rCease analysis at high burn-up. In regard to the fuel system design, we have concluded that the GGNS fuel system design is acceptable, provided that the required additional analyses and test program j
comitments are submitted for our review and found acceptable. provides our reactor physics draft SER to FSAR Sections 4.3, 15.4.1, 15.4.2, 15.4.7 and 15.4.9. As indicated in the enclosure, we conclude that all applicable criteria for these sections are met and that there are no open issues.
We request that your staff (1) review the enclosed draft SER inputs, (2) prepare responses to resolve each of the open tems, and (3) meet with tha NRC staff, if necessary, at a mutually agreeable time and place where your staff will present and discuss your responses and proposed solutions for each open itam.
