SUMMARY
OF JANUARY 8,1981 MEETING TO DISCUSS THE ULTIMATE HEAT SINK On January 8,1981, members of the NRC staff met with the applicant in Bethesda, Maryland to discuss the Ultimate Heat Sink for Waterford 3.
A list of attendees is included as Enclosure 1.
The applicant's consultant EBASCO made a presentation on the Ultimate Heat Sink to ensure that the staff understands their unique heat removal system.
Their heat removal system consists of two trains of dry towers with wet towers as boosters when required by weather conditions.
The presentation included design features, design bases and limiting conditions, implementation, safety features, and design margins of the UHS.
The staff reviewer asked several clarification questions which were responded to by EBASCO. Also, the staff asked the following question,"" Assuming a seismic event on the hottest day, and the plant stays in hot standby for 24 hours2.777778e-4 days <br />0.00667 hours <br />3.968254e-5 weeks <br />9.132e-6 months <br />, how much of the water inventory in the cooling tower basin is consumed, and will there be enough left for the remaining 29 days of the 30 day shutdown?"
The utility will consider amending the FSAR to include this infomation.
If they do not, the staff will include this question in the Q-2's.
