Dear Mr. Nichols:
SUBJECT:
USE OF L
' CODE EDITION AND ADDENDA IN THE REANALYSIS PROGRAM FOR THE VIRGIL C. SUMMER NUCLEAR STATION In your letter of December 19, 1980 you requested authorization to use~a later Code edition and addenda than that previously committed to ia che FSAR for the purpose of annlyzing the ASME Section III, Class 1, CVCS pump seal injection line ani the ASME Section III, Class 1, pressu:izer relief lines.
i As you noted in your lette;, the 1971 edition of Section III of the Code does not provide alternate design rules for small bore piping. This relaxation of the design rules was provided for in the Sumer 1975 Addenda to the 1974 edition of the Code and was expanded further in the Sumer 1976 Addenda and applies to 1 inch nominal pipe size and smaller piping. These Code modifications permit 1 inch and smaller piping to be designed in accordance with the class 2 rules of the code and is applicable to the CVCS pump seal injection line.
Similarly, the Surm:er 1979 Addenda to the 1977 Edition of the Code provides a revised treatment for the stresses resulting from linear radial thermal gradient and is applicable to the pressurizer relief lines. Other aspects 'of the analysis of the pressurizer relief lines will also be performed in accordance with Article NB-3000 of the 1977 Edition through the Sumer 1979 Addenda to the Code.
We find the selective use of the Code editions and addenda proposed by the applicant to be acceptable since their use supplement the earlier Code editions and is consistent with the intent of the Code.
Sincerely, W
Robert L. Tedesco Assistant Director for Licensing Division of Licensing cc: See next page 6
