Dear Mr. Seyfrit:

  • South Texas Project Units 1&2 Docket Nos. STN 50-498, STN 50-499 Second Interim Report Concerning Cable Tray Hanger Design As previously identified, on December 5,1980, in accordance with 10CFR-50.55(e), Houston Lighting & Power Company notified your office of an item in-volving the cable tray hanger design for the South Texas Project. During a design review it was found that for one type of hanger design, a connection be-tween a hanger beam and a vertical leg was based in part on an improper cross reference to a standard design.

The first interim report also identified several actions undertaken by Houston Lighting & Power. This report provides a status of those activities.

1) The re-evaluation of the cable tray hanger design is continuing in order to identify connections which will require modification.
2) The analyses perfonned to date continues to indicate that although some connections will require modifications to re-establish design margins, none would fail if left uncorrected.
3) The design control system has been reviewed and subsequently changed to strengthen the design controls and to require verifi-cation of the respective hanger design prior to erection of hangers.

The next interim report will be sent to you on May 15, 1981. If there are any questions about this item, please contact Mr. Michael E. Powell at (113) 676-3592.
