REQUEST FOR PROPOSED ALTERNATIVE TO REQUIREMENTS OF ASME SECTION III FOR THE DAVIS-BESSE Hl: CLEAR POWER STATION (TACNV.75848)

By letter dated February 8,1990 Toledo Edison Company requested approval for the use of B&W steam generator plugs manufactured with an alternate material. The alternate material is a nickel base alloy, ASME designation 50-166(Alloy 690).

The staff has reviewed your request and supporting information and concludes that the use of Alloy 690 as a proposed alternative to the use of Alloy 600,

in accordance with the requirements of the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, will provide an acceptable level of quality and safety and because Alloy 690 has superior anti-corrosion properties to Alloy 600.

Use of Alloy 690 in this application is hereby authorized under the provisions of 10 CFR 50.55a(a)(3) at Davis-Besse Nuclear Power Station.
