e 1". 0 Introduction j

Dresden Nuclear Power Station is a three reactor generating facility

. owned and operated by the Conunonwealth Edison Company of Chicago, Illinois. Dresden Station is located at the confluence of the Kankakee and Des Plaines Rivers, in Grundy County, near Morris, Illinois.

Dresden Unit 1 is a General Electric Boiling Water Reactor with a design net electrical output rating of 200 megawatts electrical (MWe).

The unit' is-retired in place with all nuclear fuel removed from the reactor vessel.

Therefore, no Unit 1 operating data is provided in this report, j

Dresden Units 2 and.3 are General Electric Boiling Water Reactors with design net electrical output ratings of 794 MWes each.

Waste heat is rejected to a man-made cooling lake using the Kankakee River for make-up and the Illinois River-for blowdown.

The Architect-Engineer for Dresden Units 2 and 3 was Sargent and Lundy of Chicago, Illinois.

This report was complied by Gerrine Paramore of the Dresden Technical Staff, telephone number (815)942-2920 extension 2364.

1-05-90 to 1-10-90 On January 5.1990, at approximately 2241 hours0.0259 days
0.623 hours
0.00371 weeks
8.527005e-4 months
, a ~

i Primary Containment Group I isolation and subsequent reacter scram occurred while perforining Dresden

. Instrument Surveillance (DIS) 250-1, Main Steam Line

/

High -Flow Isolaiton Switch Calibration. The Group I isolatio) was attributed to a procedural deficiency.

within DIS 250-1 such that inadequate controls were provided to prevent a potential pressure transient large enough to cause a trip on instruments in both

~

trip channels, located on a common instrument sensing line header. The corrective action included a special test of the tripped high flow switch and isolation i

manifold.. installation of hardware to aid in

+

E' performing the surveillance, and a study to investigate the feasibility of replacing the present switches with an analog trip system. On January 10, 1990 at 0255 hours0.00295 days
0.0708 hours
4.21627e-4 weeks
9.70275e-5 months
, the reactor was mao'e critical.

The generator was synchronized to the grid at 1350 hours0.0156 days
0.375 hours
0.00223 weeks
5.13675e-4 months
on January 10, 1990.

1-16-90 to 1-24-90 On January 16, 1990, at approximately 1724 hours0.02 days
0.479 hours
0.00285 weeks
6.55982e-4 months
, an automatic Unit 2 reactor scram on low reactor water

~

level (Technical Specification setpoint of eight t

inches above instrument zero) signal occurred. The 2D Cendensate/ Condensate Booster pump failed due to an

[

in ernal motor fault approximately 13 seconds prior to the scram precipitating automatic trip of the running Reactor Feed pumps on low suction pressure and thus resulting in reduction of reactor water level to the L

low level scram point. Additionally, reserve auxiliary transformer (TR) 22 tripped on sudden pressure during automatic transfer of house loads, resulting in interruption of normal AC auxiliary power until the emergency diesel generators automatically loaded. - The 20 Condensate / Condensate Booster pump motor was replaced. Transformer 22 was replaced with a spare-transformer. On January 23, 1990, at approximately 2130 hours0.0247 days
0.592 hours
0.00352 weeks
8.10465e-4 months
, the reactor was made cri ti cal. The generator was then synchronized to the grid at 1005 hours0.0116 days
0.279 hours
0.00166 weeks
3.824025e-4 months
on January 24, 1990.

1-26-90 to 1-31-90 For the remainder of the month Dresden Unit 2 remained on line and operated as directed by the corporate load dispatcher.
