By letter of January 25, 1990 GPU Nuclear Corporation requested approval for the use of B&W steam generator plugs manufactured with an alternate material.

The alternate material is a nickel base alloy, ASME designation SB-166 (Alloy i

690).

J The staff has reviewed your request and supporting information and concludes that the use of Alloy 690 as a proposed alternative to the use of Alloy 600, in accordance with the requirements of the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, will provide an acceptable level of quality and safety. Use of Alloy j

l 690iin this application is hereby authorized under the provisions of 10 CFR' 50,55a(a)(3) at Three Mile Island Unit 1.
