January 24, 1990 Docket No. 50 482 Mr. Bart D. Withers President and Chief Executive Officer Wolf Creek Nuclear Operating Corporation Post Office Box 411 Burlington, Kansas 66639 Dcar Mr. Withers:

SUDJECT:

REQUEST FOR USE OF ASME CODE CASE N.401-1 (TAC NO. 75511)

Your letter of December 14, 1989 (WM 89 0256) requested that the NRC authorize use of ASME Section XI Code Case H.401-1 entitled " Eddy Current Exanination,Section XI Division 1" pursuant to 10 CFR 50.55a(a)(3).

Code Case N.401, ap3 roved by ASME and referenced for use in Regulatory Guide 1.147, descri>es how digitized collection and storage of eddy current test data may be used as an alternative to n.agnetic tape and strip chart recording of eddy current test data required by Section XI, Division 1. Appendix IV. A revision to the ebove Code Case, designated Code Case N.401 1, has also been approved by the ASME.

Both documents address the use of digitized collection and storage of eddy current test data when performing examinations based on ASME Section XI, Appendix IV. The revision to the Code Case has a clarification with regard to specific calibration requirements contained in Appendix 1Y that.

apply only to analog instrumentation. Since Code Case N.401 1 is not currently listed in Regulatory Guide 1.147 as a Code Case endorsed by the NRC, approval for its use must be authorized by the NRC.

The staff has reviewed Code Cases N.401 and N 401 1, We find these two documents to be technically equivtlent. Therefore, pursuant to 10 CFR 50.55a(a)(3)(1) the staff finds that Code Case N.4011 provides an acceptable level of quality and t,afety and is acceptable for use as requested.

Sincerely.
