APPLICANT: Department of Energy

Clinch River Breeder Reactor

SUBJECT:

SUPNARY OF NOVaEER 2 AND 3 CRBR REVIEW MEETINGS On the morning of November 2 the applicant described the CRBR Electric Power System. The presentation focused on the one line diagrams; the status of the design; recent design changes; a description of on-site and off-site power; a description of AC &nd DC power systems; and, a discussion of Class 1E and non-Class 1E electrical systems. The applicant estimated that eighty percent of the electrical design efforts had been completed.

In the afternoon session, the applicant described the CRBR shutdown heat remaval systems. CRBR shutdown heat removal paths include: (1) the normal decay heat removal paths through the steam generators to the main condenser and cooling tower; (2) the use of the auxiliary feedwater systems and either safety relief valves or protected air cooled condensers; and (3) the direct heat removal service path utilizing a NaK loop to air blast heat exchangers. The applicant discussed the perfonnance of the shutdown heat removal systems assuming several accident scenarios. The applicant then described the natural circulation verification program using FFTF experience and stated that a preliminary report would be uallable shortly and the final report would be published in about ten months.

On November 3 the applicant described the purpose and approach for the 1977 CRBR risk analysis. The methodology and probabilistic assessment techniques i

were discussed. The applicant discussed additional risk studies which have been completed since 1977. The recent studies incorporate current reliability l

data sources and refinements to the 1977 methodology. The applicant intends to update the 1977 risk assessment next year. The applicant stated that the results of the 1977 study will not change but the revised risk assessment will reflect the design changes since 1977 and current reliability data.

The applicant completed the meeting by discussing their key systems review effort. This design assurance technique was established to provide an interdisciplinary and interorganization review of the CRBR design.
