l dM On October. 16, 1981 we received Amendment 33 to the Final, Safety Analysis

[

Report which describes certain chaiiges.toTthel611d radwaste system for Byron Station, Units 1 and 2.. In Section 11.4.3,of Amendment,33 you described a new dry waste processor which'has been added to your solid radwaste system.

.l Our current understanding of this ~ system lea'ds us,to conclude that its operation will result in additional gaseous _ releases for, the Byron Statjon. Our. review of Amendment 33 did not reveal a,quantifjcation,of. these additional releas.es.

As you are aware, our schedule.for publication of,the Draft Environmental..

Statement (DES).is November 5,1981.,It is.our position that the impact of this system should be discussed in the DES.. There. fore, we need your assess-ment o' the environmental impact, of this change to your solid radwaste system.,,

~

The timeliness of your submittal will have a direct impact on.our schedule for.

issuing the DES.

We have commicated our concerns with Amendment.33,to Mr. T. Tram of yout office on October 30, 1981.

If you have any, questions please contact. the.. _ _m staff's assigned project manager.
