Subject:

Long Tem Operability of Deep Draft Pumps IE Uulletin 79-15, dated July 11, 1979, was issued to all licensees and holders of construction permits is a result of deep draft pump deficiencies that were identified at facilities both operating and under construction.

In your response to the bulletin ynu identified deep draft pumps as being utilized at your facility. liovever, your response to the bulletin did not include enough infomation to demonstrate and assure the long tem operability of these pinps.

Enclosed is a document enti tied, " Guidelines for Demonstration of Operability of Deep Draft Puaos." Within 60 days from the issuance date of this letter, you should provide information on all the deep draft ptnps identified in your bulletin response and describe the extent to which your deep draf t ptnp long tern operability assurance program conforms to the various portions of these Guidelines. Emphasis should be placed on (1) the estab'ilshnent of installation procedures that aro followd each time these pumps are disassembled and reinstalled, and (c) the testing requirements and bearing ucar criteria.

The instruuentation called for in the Cuidelines s50uld not be considered a require 1ent.

These Cuidelines establish an acceptable nethod of assuring long tem l

operability of deep draf t pinps.

They do not necessarily constitute the only nethod for de,onstrating long term operability. The staff will review the infomation you surt to detemine whether your long tem operability assurance progrei for dee,. draft pinps is in sufficient confor.aance with l

these Guicelines to assure long tern operability.

If not, the staf f will deternine 9hether you have established and utilized other nethods and procedurcs, preferably with the assistance of the punp manufacturer, that also de1onstrate and assure that these pumps will perfom their intended function for the length of time required, l
