Dear Mr. Stello:
[
This letter is en update of Brown & Root activities with regard to the conceptual design of a supplemental HVAC system at the South Texas Project Nuclear Generating Station (STP) as reported to you in accordance with 10CFR21 in a Brown & Root letter of May 12, 1981.
At that time various spaces / cubicles in the MEAB and the FHB were identified that contained safety-related or Class 1E equipment for which the HVAC systems appeared to provide insufficient environmental cooling during certain modes of plant operation or postulated plant events.
We have developed a conceptual design modification to correct the noted HVAC deficiencies by providing safety grade cooling capability in the affected spaces / cubicles.
In this modification a two train, safety grade, chilled water system and individual fan coil units located in the affected cubicles will be Mded to supplement the existing HVAC systems. Where possible, alternatives to providing HVAC serviceare also under consideration.
The safety grade chilled water system will consist of two 100% capacity air cooled chillers serving fan coil units located in the spaces / cubicles to be cooled. The system design will incorporate redundancy to assure safe shut-down capability and will have a cooling capacity of approximately 1,170,000 Btu /hr. All equipment will be designed for Safety Class 3 and Seismic Cate-gory I service and will meet the single failure criterion.
Class IE electrical power will be provided for the redundant trains.
The system will be arranged to meet the physical and electrical separation require-ments for protection against the dynamic effects of pipe rupture, missiles, fire and flood. Access will be provided for maintenance, testing and inservice inspection.

Mr. Victor Stello, Director June 30, 1981 Page 2 The system described herein resolves the design condition previously repor ced verbally on May 8,1981, with written notification provided to you on May 12, 1981. The design of the supplemental HVAC system will be accomplished in accordance with project design and construction schedules that will provide for necessary regulatory review and approval.
Very truly yours.
