^l.hs it The Commonwealth of Virginia has completed '.ts re of the Final Programmatic Environmental Impact Statement on the deconta-mination and disposal of radioactive wastes from the Three Mile Island accident of March 28, 1979.

The Council on the Environment is responsible for coordinating the State's review of federal en-vironmental impact statements and for responding to appropriate

' federal officials on behalf of the Commonwealth.

The State Depart-ment of Health, the State Water Control Board, and the Virginia

- Institute of Marine Science participated in this review.

As we stated with respect to the Draft EIS last October, the release of processed wat -

'.4to the Susquehanna River would merit further inquiry if it were to be pursued.

The proposed safeguards and regulatory authority appear adequate to protect Virginia's in-terests.

Please keep us informed of the progress made in decontamination of the Three Mile Island facility and of any further actions that may affect Virginia.
