PRELXMINARY NOTIFICAT10N DCS No. 50213-810522 Date: May 22, 1981 PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF SAFEGUARDS EVENT--PNS-I-81-09 This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of events of POSSIBLE national security or oublic interest significance.

The information oresented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by IE staff as of this date.

Maddam Neck, Connecticut

Subject:

HADDAM NECK PLANT BOMB THREAT An employee of Connecticut Light Power Company, subsidiary of Northeast Utilities, was terminated by the company at 9:30/10:00 a.m., May 22, 1981. The employee reportedly made a threat against the Connecticut Yankee Atomic Power Company Nuclear Station located at Haddam Neck, Connecticut. The employee reportedly said that he had a boat and was going to blow-up the Connecticut Yankee Nuclear Station. The licensee (Connecticut Yankee) has filed a complaint with State and local police authorities and is in the process of notifying the FBI. As a precautionary step, the licensee has increased surveillance at the site and specifically at the intake structure facility for the next few days.

This Preliminary Notification is issued for information and no further action by IE is anticipated.

IAT has been advised.

No press release is planned by the licensee or' the NRC at this time.

The State of Connecticut has been notified.

NRC Region I, (Philadelphia) received notification of this occurrence from the NRC Duty Officer at 11:59 a.m.
