W. L. Axelson, J. P. Patterson, and M. P. Phillips of this office on March 25, 1981, of activities of the Dresden Nuclear Generating Station, Units 1, 2 and 3, authorized by hTC Operating Licenses No. DPR-2, No. DPR-19 and No. DPR-25 and to the discussion of our findings with Mr. V. L. Chaney, D. Farrar, and others of your staff at the conclusion of the inspection. The enclosed copy of our inspection report identifies areas examined during the inspection. Within these areas, the inspection consisted of a selective examination of procedures, observations, and interviews with personnel. No items of noncompliance with NRC requirements were identifted during the course of this inspection. We are concerned about the use of the glass sample vial and the associated handling of this vial during the drill witnessed by us during this inspec- tion. The enclosed inspection report delineates areas whicn need improvement. Specifically, we feel your interim post accident primary coolant sampling procedure and sampling equipment are inadequate. We request that you give this matter your attention and inform us by letter within twenty-five days of your action to correct it. In accordance with Section 2.790 of the NRC's " Rules of Practice," Part 2, Title 10, Code of Federal Regulations, a copy of this letter, the enclosures, and your response to this letter will be placed in the NRC's Fublic Document Room, except as follows.
